There are 4 parts to complete this assignment: (1) Research, (2) Conceptualize, (3) Draft, (4) Final Artwork.

(1) Research

Many researches on booklet, coffee table books have been done. The theme of "holiday", "vintage", "relax" have been considered in sketching the layout. Following were some of the examples:

(2) Conceptualization
However, wood has been used as the main material in this booklet. The feeling that need to be deliver was   " Wood"  to present the feeling of holiday. Given an example, "wood house" located nearby the beach. As the purpose of this booklet is to promote tourism in Malaysia, and beaches in Malaysia are those interesting places to travel. From research, a coffee booklet shall not carry too many information, and mainly driven by pictures. Therefore, in the research part, is to search best pictures to insert into the booklet.

The main idea of this booklet:
Have a relax holiday in Malaysia (by using wood, sand and light colour to indicate the feeling of relax in the beach)

(3) Draft/ Sketches
It is to present a simple and nice booklet without loaded with too many information. Thus, the layout of this booklet shall be clear and defined. Following are the sketches before start doing the booklet:

First of all, front page will be using wood as the main element/ background with attractive pictures. Intro page will be covered by one picture and simple line on top. Following pages of content are more or less the same as drafted. However, foreword page is to mainly feature Dato Ng Yen Yen with limited words. Of course, the background will apply the main theme as front cover.

3. 1 Progress/ Steps

Front page

Step 1: First of all, it is to create the layout, the background were downloaded from Google image. To present the feeling of what have been conceptualized, the colour and image have been standardized.

Step 2: Insert pictures and Tourism Malaysia logo

It is to edit Tourism Malaysia logo in photoshop and add inner glow effect over it, so that it looks clearer on the wood background. Pictures of white frame were edited on "Galaxy Note 2", so that it presents a feeling of "postcard", in which represent travels.

Page 2: Foreword

Step 1: Same background has applied on foreword page, as well as same title font.

Step 2: Caption box with words added in as well, box has been adjusted to merely transparent. The rationale to hold the box was black font is not able to see on the wood background.

Step 3: Dato Ng Yen Yen picture has been downloaded from Google image, and has been edited in Photoshop. Using pentool to path Dato Ng and enlarged and place it on the left of foreword box.

Page 3: Introduction

Step 1: Background was added with "typography" on the back, and followed by chosen picture.

Step 2: Title and descriptions have been added on the picture.

Page 4 & 5: Centerspread, content page

Step 1: High Pixel picture selected and spread over the center page. Size of image has been adjusted proportionally.

Step 2: Description and caption has been added on right, since it is a coffee book and to present a feeling of relax, it is to leave more spaces in the booklet rather than loaded with too many words. Also, font size and type have been adjusted as well.

Page 6 & 7: Center-spread, content page

Step 1: To insert background, and typo fonts, duplicated all over the page. It is to present a combination of "modern & wood" feeling.

Step 2: Typography will hide under the wood, low transparency to make it slightly visible on the surface.

Step 3: Photo has been edited with "Samsung Note 2" and place widely on centrespread page. Alignment of picture and words most likely same as page 4 & 5 to make it standardize.

Step 5: It is to add the title and words on the right page, more spacing to make it less clutter as it is a coffee table book.

Designing a newsletter is not just simply chucking in images and articles just for the sake of making a power-packed pieces of booklet. It is about creating an art of crafting a news article with enhancing the details by fitting in new layout that is appropriate to the overall feel of the newsletter. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the function of this newsletter, and in hoping to know that, we will be able to translate the objective of this newsletter and interpret it in a creative manner.

This E-Newsletter serves as a monthly/bi-monthly bulletin that covers all sorts of happenings within the university, ranging from academic achievements, to student-initiated programs and events. The e-newsletter will be made as a digital copy of the newsletter that serve as a communication media tool for students, staff and every potential prospects of HELP University and HELP Group as a whole.

We have first task divided to the group is to look for at least three example of newsletters. After some brief deliberation and discussion, we decided to snap few shots of magazines which we feel might be feasible for newsletter layout

The objective of this exercise is to grasp as much ideas or details and consolidate into one single ideal feel of design that will reflect the tone and manner of the newsletter that we are to work on. Our group has selected these few magazine layout designs as a reference to guide our layout of newsletter design.
